Mining sandstone in India’s Rajasthan desert can be lethal. Learn how long-term Thousand Currents partner, GRAVIS: Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samiti, is responding to health issues created by a lack of enforcement of worker protection laws and intergenerational poverty.

Special correspondent Fred de Sam Lazaro reports on the PBS NewsHour and interviews Dr. Prakash Tyagi, Director of GRAVIS and a medical doctor and public health professional.

GRAVIS has been working for the rights of mineworkers since 1992, supporting their unionization and organizing dozens of health camps and awareness camps on issues such as occupational health hazards, safe drinking water, importance of mineworkers’ children’s education, and the ill effects of liquor and opium.
