Meet Aziz Azad: A Q&A with the New Accounting Manager

Why did you want to work for Thousand Currents? What made you apply to the organization?

I have worked for over 10 years mainly for organizations whose area of focus has been supporting international development in the Global South. Most nonprofit organizations support short to midterm projects, and I don’t think that this approach leads to tangible and sustainable international development. Thousand Currents’ approach of helping the grassroots organizations with unrestricted and long-term funding is a much more sustainable approach. I am glad I am a part of this organization now.

I also love the values (courage, humility, experimentation, and independence) that Thousand Currents embodies. I value the the diversity across the organization. As an immigrant myself, I feel very much at home at Thousand Currents.

What will be your new role at Thousand Currents?

In short as the Accounting Manager, I will help develop, monitor and implement internal control systems, as well as finance and operations policies and procedures. My role also includes day to day management of Thousand Currents’ financial operations and financial reporting to both internal management and external stakeholders.

What gifts do you hope to share in your new role?

I bring over 10 years of experience and commitment to nonprofit and international development work that I hope will be of some assistance to Thousand Currents’ work and vision.

What is your vision or hope for the communities you work with and the work you’re doing?

I hope that the grassroots organizations that we support, some day get equipped with the necessary tools and resources to become self sufficient, and can create just and equitable societies around them. I hope that in my capacity I can provide all the needed support to the Thousand Currents’ goal of providing that support.

What do you do when you are not working at Thousand Currents?

I love watching soccer, cricket, MMA and tennis. I am also a professional recreational tennis player, and of course as a family man, I love going out with my family.
