Focus on the Global South was established in 1995 to challenge neoliberalism, militarism and corporate-driven globalisation while strengthening just and equitable alternatives. They work in solidarity with the Global South – the great majority of humanity that is marginalized and dispossessed by globalisation – believing that progressive social change and Global South solidarity are imperative if the needs and aspirations of oppressed peoples, particularly in Asia, Latin America and Africa, are to be met.
As part of the anti-globalisation movement, Focus on the Global South has been developing and popularizing the paradigm of deglobalisation since 2000. Deglobalisation promotes the transformation of the global economy from one centered around the needs of transnational corporations, to one that focuses on the needs of people, communities and nations, and where social solidarity is strengthened by subordinating the operations of the market to values of equity, justice, community and harmony with nature.
Focus on the Global South work on three broad thematic areas:
- Political economy of development
- Power and Democracy
- Peoples’ Alternatives, each of which are interrelated and interdependent
