Kenyan Peasants League
Ensuring food sovereignty and land rights for women in Kenya
Founded in 2016, The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) is a social movement of Kenyan farmers and consumers whose main goal is to promote peasantry and agroecology as a means to ensure food sovereignty. KPL focuses on indigenous seed banks, livestock, and plant varieties in support of their investment in the creation of an alternative economy. They are driven by a desire to ensure sustainable livelihoods for farmers, fisherfolk and pastoralists. KPL members are organized in clusters so that they can jointly produce and market it well to ensure food sovereignty. KPL works to streamline the voices of Kenyan peasant farmers and consumers against the World Trade Organisation and its practices that commodify food production and food production systems.
KPL has actively mobilized Kenyan peasant farmers and consumers to push for agrarian reforms and organic farming practices to ensure food sovereignty and environmental conservation. KPL generates case studies as evidence of environmental degradation and environmental injustices which they use for their advocacy work. KPL also has a clear feminist articulation and has a peasants’ feminism program that focuses on women’s land rights and access to land.
