Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU)

Collective power toward equality in rights to land and natural resources

Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU) is a national non-governmental organization working to support the recognition and protection of land rights held under customary tenure in Uganda, at both local and national levels. Since 2003, LEMU has conducted grounded action research, effectively engaging various stakeholders (state, non-state, and academic) to reduce inequality in areas where customary tenure prevails. Their efforts aim to promote land rights and prevent the dispossession of the most vulnerable sections of society by mobilizing their collective power, empowering them to analyze their situations and engage with actors and factors that undermine their rights to land and other natural resources. LEMU has documented principles governing the management and redistribution of customary land, and promoted the delineation of customary land using traditional boundary trees and GPS maps.
