Hikone Mocambique – Associação para o Empoderamento da Mulher

Empowering rural women to own their lives

Founded in 2013, Hikone Mocambique – Associação para o Empoderamento da Mulher (‘Hikone’ loosely translates to ‘we are here’ in English) is an anti-extractive feminist movement which resists violent systemic socio-economic and cultural exploitation of women. Focusing on human rights, access to education and control over land and livelihoods, Hikone’s work builds and strengthens groups of rural women who live in extractive areas and of conflict.

The organization facilitates feminist alternative development centers where women have opportunities to share, learn and implement ecologically conscious economic activities, such as family farming, agroecology, the processing of agricultural products, the production of firewood- saving cookers, literacy, production of nurseries for harvesting of Indigenous fruits, savings and informal trade.
