Movimento pela Soberania Popular na Mineração

Resisting worker exploitation in Brazilian mines

Movimento pela Soberania Popular na Mineração (MAM) is a social movement formed by urban and rural, Indigenous and Quilombola communities affected by extractive mining in Brazil. MAM has two main objectives:

  1. to organize the populations affected by the mining project; and
  2. to build societal awareness of the mineral export model of Brazil’s mining industry in order to advocate for the sovereignty of Brazilian people over the country’s resources.

They have been successful in limiting the expansion of bauxite and phosphate mining in the region of Serra do Brigadeiro in Minas Gerais and in Ceará, respectively.
