Red de Comercialización Comunitaria Alternativa (Red COMAL)

Fostering solidarity economy principles across food systems

The Red de Comercialización Comunitaria Alternativa (Red COMAL) is an association of 70 grassroots organizations composed of Indigenous peoples and peasants. Founded in 1993, their mission is to protect peasant and Indigenous land and territories while fostering economic justice through participatory approaches. The network operates in 8 departments of Honduras, focusing on areas where the population historically marginalized by government policies is concentrated.

Red COMAL promotes agroecological production, product processing, and community marketing. Red COMAL’s commercial arm is the Empresa de Comercialización Alternativa Solidaria (ECOMAS), a community-owned initiative that facilitates direct relationships between producers and consumers. ECOMAS has 89 social productive businesses and credit businesses that endure the supply of peasant production, which are distributed in local markets and in private supermarkets.

Red COMAL’s entire work is based on the principles of solidarity economy, defense of the land and territory, human rights, and the struggle for justice and peace. Red COMAL supports local populations, including youth and women, in maintaining their right to remain in their territories and resist extractive industries.
